The Mylio Grant: Memories and Stories
Costică Acsinte Archive
Popescu Mario-Cezar - Ialomita, România
Romanian WW1 photographer, Costică Acsinte left around 10.000 glass plates negatives of exceptionally importance. This project is about digitizing and disseminating his work.
Costică Acsinte (1897-1984) was a romanian photographer active in WW1 as a official romanian army photograher who, after his discharge in 1920 opened a commercial photo studio in town of Slobozia, SE of Romania, where he successfully conduct his business till his retirement, in 1964. His heritage consists of almost 10.000 glass plates, a small number of sheet films and a hand made photo album with 347 prints (all taken during WW1, depicting important personalities such as Ferdinand I of Romania, Queen Marie of Romania, Carol II of Romania, Henri Mathias Berthelot or General Eremia Grigorescu). According to romanian IP law ALL his photographs are now in public domain.
The glass plates and the photo-album were part purchased part donated by/to Ialomița County Museum who let me digitize them (we have a signed collaboration contract). Until now i've already done almost one third of the job, all the expenses being covered by me (€2500) or by various donations (€3200).
His photographs are of huge interest (ie, on flickr only they have been viewed by more than 16.000.000 times [sic!] ) and this is what makes me think you will be interested too.
Unfortunately, the museum that hosts them have no budged for properly store the plates (the conditions are not even close to ISO 18902:2007) and the danger of fully destruction is still present – some of the plates are already gone beyond recognition.
Regarding digitization, the chosen standards are over your minimum specs (dng, grayscale 16bits, 1200–2400dpi) for master copies. All the work is backed-up on a bi-monthly basis on three different physical locations (one at the museum, one at my work location and one at my brother's house).
After I will finish the digitization I plan to open an exhibition (I already have several interested partners) and release a photo-album (again, I already have a interested publisher).

To sum up: the project is about digitizing around 10.000 photographs taken by Costică Acsinte during WW1 and afterwards till 1964 and to secure the original plates minimum archival conditions (acid free, four flaps envelopes). Besides internet, his work will be disseminated via exhibitions and a printed album.
