"Bright Moments"

Dennis Hearne - California 94133, United states

“Bright Moments” is a celebration of the light and textures of an unique circle of San Franciscans who probably will be looked at as the “old guard” as the city quickly suffers Manhattenization to its deficit. The series has been part of a ongoing project last realized in the book “Come and Go” (which can be found at http://www.blurb.com/books/2550548-come-and-go) and now is being updated and more integrated during the past 3-4 years with totally newer images as my process develops

My imagery tips a hat to my early mentors from 30’s Paris and 50’s New York and develops the themes of interactions of light with the resonance of past shadows.
I usually keep some distance while engaging in events using photography as an exchange of time for it’s shadow.

My subject could be anyone or anywhere within the city of San Francisco, but leans towards musicians who work hard to entertain while usually being underpaid. They are probably the linking notes within a book that mixes architecture, neighborhood locals, artists, poets and and their unique interaction in the environment. With the massive domination of the economics of the finances of San Francisco’s by a young and affluent tech elite, the middle class and the artists are quickly being displaced to other cities.

These images attempt at a certain elegance of presentation both in content and construction. I challenge myself to find the world just outside my door as vibrant and visually attractive as any journey I might take outside my normal environment to find something new to shoot. I use the terms “just outside my cabin door” and San Francisco as my “Foreign City” to encourage myself to find this state of heightened awareness within my closest environment.

Any funds gained towards this project will be used to print a “affordable” (in the range of $35 -$40 dollars) of approximately 120-150 page book in an edition of perhaps 300 books. The funds can also enable me to give back prints to the participants of the exchange between myself and my subjects. I use Blurb services and other printing services as way to mock up and solve page sequences, and the general tone, texture, and color of my books. The current version of “Bright Moments’ is in it’s fourth edit.
